5 Steps to Applying for an Irish Driving Licence
If you’re new to Ireland, or if you’ve been here for awhile but haven’t gotten around to getting your Irish driver’s licence, it’s important to know how to go about the process so that it doesn’t take over your entire weekend! While there are certainly multiple steps involved, once you have the information, it will be much easier to work through each part of the application process and get your licence as soon as possible. So, here are 5 steps to apply for an Irish driving licence today!
Step 1: Plan Your Trip
If you're planning on driving in Ireland, the first thing you'll need is a valid driver's license. There are a few different ways of obtaining one, but if you are applying from abroad, it will depend on the country that issued your driver's license.
Step 2: Book Your Flight and Accommodation
If you're not yet living in Ireland, you'll need to book your flight and accommodation before you can apply for your licence. The easiest way to do this is by using a travel agent. Simply give them a call and they will be able to find the cheapest flights and hotels available. Alternatively, if you have the time, it's always cheaper to book flights yourself. To get the best deals, book in advance as fares increase closer to departure date.
Step 3: Pass The Online Theory Test
The online theory test is available in 18 languages, which makes it accessible to almost anyone. The test consists of 50 questions about the rules of the road, road signs and signals, and safe driving practices. Once you're ready to take the test, click on Start Test and you'll be prompted with a selection of 50 questions. Choose one question at a time by clicking on it. Click on Show All Questions at any time if you want to see all 50 questions again before choosing one.
Step 4: Book an Appointment with the NDLS
Booking an appointment with the NDLS is a simple process. Once you find the closest office, all you need to do is call them up and book your spot. When you’re booking your appointment, it’s important that you provide all of the relevant information that they ask for so that things go smoothly when you show up. If this is your first time in Ireland, it would be a good idea to bring your passport just in case.
Step 5: Book An appointment at your Local Approved Exam Centre
The final step in the process is to book an appointment at your local approved exam centre. You can find a list of all the centres here. To book an appointment, you will need your DLS1 form, your driving licence and proof of address.
